The Massive Impact of Just $10 in Haiti

by MercyWorks on August 1, 2019

As we explore the beautiful community of Bois de Laurence, Haiti, we've shared that a $10 per month donation, gives a child the gift of education at St. Jean Bosco School for the entire year. However, the impact of $10 per month goes far beyond the child’s education in Haiti.

Read on as we share just how big of an impact your monthly gift makes.

A donation of just $10 a month can send a child to school for a year. Sponsor a student today!

Supporting the Whole Child

You may not know it, but for the same price as a monthly Netflix subscription, your $10 gift gives more than education. It gives these children meals to eat, clothes to wear, provides much-needed extra income to their mothers and fathers, and stimulates the local job market. Your monthly donation, that single sponsorship, contributes to the entire local economy of the village of Bois de Laurence.

There is already a shortage of teachers at the school, and building a high school means hiring more faculty. In order to do so, the school needs the financial resources to be able to pay teachers and administrators a just wage. Jobs are incredibly hard to come by in Haiti, and especially in Bois de Laurence. The more students who are sponsored, the easier it will be for the parish community to afford to expand the school’s physical structure, increase enrollment, and thus provide jobs for more Haitians.

Your Gift Goes Beyond the Child

In addition to stimulating the economy through jobs, monthly sponsorships also provide families with basic necessities. Many families can’t afford to have more than one meal a day, or pay for new clothes for their growing children. One advantage of schooling is that the children are given uniforms and fed a healthy meal during lunch time. For some children, this is their only  meal each day — especially if the rain has ruined the family’s bean or rice crop (which happens a few times per season).

Many parents give almost everything they earn in a year to pay for their child to go to school. With their child’s school tuition sponsored, they will have more money to spend on things like health care and improving their quality of life, which (at least materially speaking) is often far below what they and their children need to thrive.

Other Ways to Support St. Jean Bosco

Aside from your monthly financial support, your advocacy and prayers are two very important ways you can support the work of the St. Jean Bosco School. One great way to support our missionaries' efforts is to bring awareness to the St. Jean Bosco mission project, by sharing our stories with your friends, family, and on social media. Where there is greater awareness of the mission, there is greater opportunity for support.

Please also keep our missionaries and their efforts to expand St. Jean Bosco in your prayers. You can join us in our nine-day Novena for Youth Around the World, where we pray for specific intentions surrounding the Bosco School.

For those of us in the developed world, $10 a month seems like nothing; for a family in Bois de Laurence, it could mean everything.

This is the MercyWorks promise — 100% of every dollar you donate to the mission, will go directly to the St. Jean Bosco School to fund our students' education, support their well-being, and to meet our many other needs. Thank you for your support!

Want to offer the gift of education, clothing, and food to a student? Just $10 per month sends them to
