A Community Revitalized: St. Charles Primary School Update

by MercyWorks on September 25, 2024

God continues to move in significant ways through St. Charles Primary School in Chisankhwa, Malawi. Through His grace and the support of our mission partners, along with this community's inspiring initiative, we have achieved remarkable progress this past year.

Reflecting on the Past, Embracing Ambitious Goals

In 2023, we successfully completed Phase II of our construction, welcoming 171 students from grades 1 through 4, and established community self-help groups to support our young leaders. This laid a solid foundation for the future of St. Charles Malawi.

A large group of school children in uniforms stand in line outdoors, with a grassy area and hills in the background.

However, our journey is far from over. In fact, the work is just beginning in Chisankhwa.

At the start of the year, the students noticed that not all their peers could join them at school. When their teachers explained that limited space prevented others from attending, these young students decided to take action.

They began by planting a garden in the schoolyard, growing soybeans and vegetables. After their first harvest, they used the proceeds to buy fifty bags of cement for new classrooms, as well as books and soccer balls for those still waiting to attend.

Several children in blue uniforms are building a structure with sticks arranged in a circle around a plant, outside a brick building.A group of children in uniforms are washing their hands at an outdoor water pump station in a rural setting.

Their efforts have inspired parents, missionaries, and neighbors alike. This community is reinvigorated not only thanks to the presence of St. Charles, but from the students who are embracing this gift of education and living the call of the Gospel.

The Profound Impact of St. Charles Primary School

We have witnessed the profound impact of St. Charles Primary School in providing better opportunities and a brighter future to the youth in the community. Without a school, students must walk great distances to receive an education. This leads to high dropout rates, low literacy rates, and increased rates of child labor and teen marriage.

But, over the last few years, we have witnessed remarkable progress at the St. Charles Malawi School. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’ve provided students in grades 1 through 4 with the gift of education.

Entering the Final Leg of the Journey

As we stand at the start of a new academic year, our focus is on providing further support. Our goal for 2024 includes offering education to an additional 45 students and enhancing faith formation to mold students as faithful followers of Jesus. To achieve this, we must continue to raise money towards the school's expansion and transformational impact.

We urge you to consider being part of this vital mission and contribute to the education and growth of the children in Chisankhwa.

We also invite you to explore our prayer resources and join us in praying for these young students and the surrounding community.
