Last spring, we shared the story of Laminia, a village in Senegal where young girls and mothers walked miles every day just to collect water for their families. With the weight of survival on their shoulders, pursuing an education was never an option. Instead of spending time in the classroom, they spent hours in the dry Senegal sun expending valuable energy on basic necessities.
Thanks to God’s provision and the generosity of many, that story has started to change. What began as an Easter goal of $2,500 grew into more than $16,000 in gifts, funding the building of a well in the heart of Laminia. Today, families in the village have access to clean, reliable water, and for the first time in memory, girls no longer have to rise each morning to make the long, exhausting journey for survival.
The well has done more than provide clean water; it has opened the door to new opportunities. With hours of their day restored, the girls of Laminia can now envision a different future. Where a quality education was once out of reach, the blessed support of donors has opened space for hope.
The support from our donors has made it possible to build a well for the village of Laminia.
But clean water was only the first step. The need for education in Laminia is as urgent as ever, with many families facing barriers like tuition fees, uniforms, meals, and transportation costs that still stand in the way. Without support, many girls will remain at home, their chance at education slipping away.
The next chapter of this mission is clear: to extend education to the girls of Laminia. MercyWorks has set a goal to raise $15,000 to support our long-term objective of sending 100 girls to school within the next year. Each $150 scholarship covers the essentials:
With your help, the hopeful trajectory of Laminia’s mothers, sisters, and daughters will continue.
The story of Laminia is no longer only about survival. With clean water secured, education now has the chance to take root. Each scholarship represents not just one girl’s future, but the future of her family, her community, and generations to come.
We are humbled by the outpouring of support that made the well possible, and we invite you to walk with us into this next phase. Together, we can help the girls of Laminia step into classrooms, discover their potential, and embrace the future God has prepared for them.
